San Diego Arts Organizations
Recognized for Quality Work
with Kids and Communities

Senator Kehoe Joins the California Arts Council to Honor 18 Organizations that Contribute to "Creative California"

SACRAMENTO – State Senator Christine Kehoe will join the California Arts Council for a grant awards presentation on Wednesday, October 17, 2008, in San Diego to honor 18 arts organizations and highlight the quality work they do in schools and communities.  The event will take place at the Malashock Dance Studio at Dance Place San Diego at 2650 Truxtun Road, NTC Promenade, San Diego, CA 92106 from 10 a.m. until Noon.  The California Arts Council grant awards presentation is generously co-hosted by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture Malashock Dance & Company, and the NTC Foundation.

"These California Arts Council grantees work hard to bring the arts to San Diego—many for children who otherwise might not have access to the arts," said Muriel Johnson, Director of the California Arts Council.  "Other grantees contribute to their community with programs that encourage public participation and community building through collaborations with other organizations.  San Diego is fortunate to have such dedicated organizations."

The California Arts Council will be honoring grantees in three programs: Artists in Schools (AIS), Creating Public Value through the Arts (CPV), and State-Local Partnership (SLP).  The City of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, an SLP recipient, is the key local agency for the arts in San Diego.  The Creating Public Value through the Arts grant awards are given to arts organizations in rural or underserved areas to implement projects that strengthen relationships within their communities, demonstrate relevance to those they serve, and show a positive return on investment.  The Artists in Schools recipient organizations provide quality arts training to K-12 children by professional artists during the school day or in after-school programs.  Over $170,000 in grants is being awarded.  A list of the organizations to be honored is attached.

For more information, contact the California Arts Council's communications director Mary Beth Barber at (916) 322-6588, (916) 835-5580 (cell) or mbarber@caartscouncil.com.  On-site contact is Deputy Director Marilyn Nielsen at (916) 798-7845 (cell).  Contact Sean Wherley in Senator Kehoe's office at (619) 645-3133 or sean.wherley@sen.ca.gov.  For location information and questions, contact Alan Ziter, Executive Director for the NTC Foundation, at (619) 573-9315.
