Emeralds

Emeralds is a selection from the ballet Jewels.  George Balanchine was inspired by the artistry of jewelry designer Claude Arpels, and chose music revealing the essence of each jewel.  Emeralds, which Balanchine considered "an evocation of France - the France of elegance, comfort, dress, perfume," recalls the 19th century dances of the French Romantics.

Music: Pelléas et Mélisande (1898) and Shylock (1889) by Gabriel Faure

Choreographer: George Balanchine

Staged by: Elyse Borne

Year Choreographed: 1967

City Ballet Premiere: November 9, 2012

Costume Design: Barbara Karinska (Varvara Jmoudsky)

Lighting Design: Pamela Sherman-Keel

Tarantella

The nimble quickness of Tarantella provides a virtuosic showcase.  With a profusion of steps and quick changes of direction, this brief but explosive pas de deux typifies the ways in which Balanchine expanded the traditional vocabulary of classical dance.

Music: Grand Tarantelle for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 67 by Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Hershy Kay

Choreographer: George Balanchine

Staged by: Elyse Borne

Year Choreographed: 1964

City Ballet Premiere: May 2005

Costume Design: Barbara Karinska (Varvara Jmoudsky)

Lighting Design: Pamela Sherman-Keel

Paquita

Paquita was first presented as a full-length ballet by the Paris Opera Ballet in April 1846.  In 1881, Marius Petipa produced a revival, adding new pieces with music composed by Ludwig Minkus.  Petipa's additions with Minkus' music survived long after the full-length Paquita left the stage.  Today, Petipa's additions are major cornerstones of traditional classical ballet.

Music: Ludwig Minkus (1881)

Choreographer: Elizabeth Wistrich, after Marius Petipa

Year Choreographed: 2003

City Ballet Premiere: May 2003

Lighting Design: Pamela Sherman-Keel

Infinitus Terminus

An all-new work by City Ballet dance artist Geoffrey Gonzalez.
